.2023 Act on Some of the Facts

It can be quite difficult to make a decision without having all the necessary information and details beforehand. Recently, I had a conversation with a young man who shared his experience of having his professors change the rules regarding the management of his classes.

He mentioned that there were alterations made to the syllabus of a couple of his classes, resulting in changing the dates of exams. Unfortunately, he was notified about these modifications after the grace period of the semester had passed, which meant he missed the opportunity to get his tuition fees refunded. As a result of these changes, he faced the challenge of having two to three exams scheduled for the same day.

I concurred with him that their actions were unjust and he was not provided with sufficient information to make a proper choice. This guy had to determine whether to accept the modified courses or quit, lose his tuition fees, and wait for another semester to graduate.

It was fascinating because I was approximately the same age as him when one of my undergraduate instructors informed me that we will not have access to all the necessary details to make decisions in real life. He informed the class that we may only have access to 50% of the information if we are fortunate enough to make a decision. I relayed this insight to the young man, and he was grateful for the advice.

After several months, I reflected on how one person had to make an extremely crucial choice in the 20th Century despite not having complete information. When Franklin Roosevelt passed away in April 1945, Harry Truman became the new president of the United States. Truman was unaware of the Manhattan Project since Roosevelt never informed him.

As a result, Truman had three atomic bombs at his disposal and was given the power to deploy them against Japan during World War II. It is difficult to imagine how complicated some choices can be, as Truman had to contemplate the course of history while considering what to do.

Truman, similar to other leaders, encountered a situation where he had to make a prompt decision with restricted knowledge. This is an experience that everyone undergoes at certain stages in life. Nonetheless, when one fails to make a decision, the lack of action itself becomes a decision. Refraining from deciding is also a form of deciding.

When you are lacking information, what method should you use to make a choice?

Here is a suggested procedure:

Consider the available information - Truman had possession of three atomic bombs, all capable of obliterating a whole city.

Truman observed the trial of an atomic bomb in a desert and gained a heightened understanding of the true power of the weapon. Evaluate the information you have gathered.

Examine the potential impact of the information you have on your future choices. Truman received a prediction regarding the potential number of casualties for American troops in a potential battle with Japan. Truman had the choice of using the atomic bomb instead of attacking a Japanese city to reduce the number of American casualties.

4. Act decisively.

Truman instructed for the two remaining atomic bombs to be deployed against the Japanese in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. By utilizing both bombs in combat, the war was brought to a faster conclusion, resulting in less American casualties.

Truman, a skilled decision-maker, takes action when needed and accepts complete accountability for his actions. Even if the results did not align with Truman's intentions, he still made a choice. If Truman did not take action, the war would have prolonged, and more American lives would have been sacrificed.

Despite the fact that the decision was not popular, Truman recognized its necessity.

We do not possess the ability to predict future information and happenings, including Truman. However, we can take deliberate action and make a decision as we cannot ascertain the exact outcome of a choice. Failing to decide for ourselves would mean someone or something else will take up that task. Ultimately, the decision to make or not to make lies in our hands.

What choice will you make?

Summary:

It can be very difficult to make a decision without having all the necessary information and facts beforehand. I recently had a conversation with a young man who shared his experience of his professors changing the rules and syllabus of his classes, leading to exam date switches. Unfortunately, he was only informed of these changes after the grace period of the semester had passed, which meant that he could not drop the course to receive a refund on his tuition. As a result of the changes, he was forced to take two or three exams on the same day, which was a challenging situation for him.
