According to research carried out by Murad Ali at Davenport University, employers are the least inclined to hire Muslims compared to other ethnic groups. The study involved students who were either enrolled in business undergraduate classes or pursuing an MBA.

These students were working full-time, with their job positions varying from entry-level to senior executive.

A significant number of those in the MBA program were already serving as managers and held the ability to recruit new personnel for their respective organizations.

In this study, participants assigned rankings from 1 to 5 to applicants for various jobs based on their own biases.


A score of 1 indicated that the applicant was the most appealing


, while a score of 5 indicated that the applicant was the least attractive. All of the applicants were deemed to be equally competent, and all were males. The sole distinction among the candidates was their names, which belonged to distinct ethnic and racial groups such as White, Black, Asian, Hispanic, and Muslim.


The study's findings revealed that employers showed a preference for hiring African American, Caucasian, Asian, and Hispanic individuals over Muslim applicants. African Americans had a higher likelihood of being called back for employment compared to Muslims who were the least likely to receive a callback. The collected data was divided into groups, with African Americans, Caucasians, and Asians on the left side and Hispanics and Muslims on the far right side. Information about the background of the study participants was not gathered.

An intriguing observation indicates that individuals who are viewed as being part of the dominant culture or have been residing in the nation for an extended period all received similar evaluations. Conversely, Hispanic and Muslim immigrants, who are regarded as newer arrivals, were classified as having the lowest chances of obtaining employment.

Consequently, it appears that immigrants are not perceived as being as desirable as "typical Americans" to potential employers. Thus, it is plausible that this group experiences poverty, joblessness, and inadequate access to healthcare due to factors beyond their control rather than their own decisions.



Employers need to take note of the findings of this research, as it can affect their adherence to the Civil Rights Act. With the growing awareness of Muslim employees about their workplace rights, employers may face an increase in legal actions. If the hiring managers let their personal biases influence their recruitment decisions, rather than selecting the most competent candidates, it could have an impact on the company's profits.
